Roof-mounted extract fans are the simplest way to extract air from a building — no ductwork needed on the discharge side, which reduces installation cost and system resistance. They're standard on commercial kitchens, warehouses, factories, retail units, and any building where the exhaust can discharge directly to atmosphere.

Vertical discharge vs horizontal discharge

Vertical discharge fans exhaust air straight up. They're the most common type and work well in most applications. However, they can cause issues near air intake points on taller adjacent buildings — the exhaust plume rises and can be drawn back in.

Horizontal discharge fans (sometimes called mushroom fans or centrifugal roof units) throw the exhaust air outwards and downwards, dispersing it more quickly. They're the better choice near building boundaries, where vertical discharge could cause re-entrainment, or in areas with planning restrictions on visible roof equipment.

Key specification considerations

Roof fans must be matched to a compatible roof curb (the mounting base that sits on the roof and provides weatherproofing). Always check the curb dimensions match your existing or planned opening. For kitchen extraction, ensure the fan is rated for grease-laden air and elevated temperatures — a standard roof fan used on a kitchen extract will be a fire risk.
