Aluminium flexible ducting is semi-rigid corrugated aluminium duct that stretches out to length, holds its shape and cuts easily on site. It is the usual choice for connecting cooker hoods, tumble dryers, fans, grilles and terminals to the rest of a duct run. We stock Systemair aluminium flexible ducting from 82mm to 406mm diameter and eFans Direct aluminium ducting in 102mm, 127mm, 152mm and 203mm, all in 10m lengths. Frequently asked questions
What is aluminium flexible ducting used for?
Connecting fans, cooker hoods, tumble dryers, grilles and terminals to ductwork on low and medium pressure ventilation systems. Because it is all aluminium, with no plastic or fabric layer, it suits warm extract air and runs where a fire resistant duct is preferred. It is also a quick way to make the final connection between a rigid duct run and a fan or terminal.
Aluminium, combi or insulated ducting?
Plain aluminium flexible ducting is the lightest and lowest cost, and suits warm air and short connections. Combi ducting adds a tough PVC outer over an aluminium inner for runs where the duct may get knocked or scuffed. Insulated ducting wraps an aluminium core in glass wool insulation, which stops condensation and cuts noise where the duct passes through a cold loft or void.
What sizes of aluminium ducting do you stock?
From 82mm up to 406mm diameter, all in 10m lengths. Many sizes are imperial: 102mm, 127mm, 152mm and 203mm are 4in, 5in, 6in and 8in, and fit over 100mm, 125mm, 150mm and 200mm spigots. Use the size buttons above the products to filter, and check the spigot on your fan or cooker hood before ordering.
Can aluminium ducting be used for cooker hoods?
Yes, it is the common choice for cooker hood extract. Keep the run as short and straight as you can, pull the duct taut, and follow the cooker hood manufacturer's limits on duct length, diameter and number of bends, because every metre of flexible duct and every bend reduces the airflow the hood delivers.
How do I install and join aluminium ducting?
Extend the duct to length, push it over the spigot of the fan, terminal or rigid duct and secure it with a hose clip, then seal the joint with aluminium foil tape. Pull it taut so the corrugations do not trap grease or condensate, and support long horizontal runs so the duct does not sag.
Can aluminium ducting be used outside?
It is not designed for exposed external runs. Change to a rigid duct before the outside wall and finish with a weather louvre, wall outlet or roof cowl.
Does flexible ducting reduce airflow?
Yes, more than rigid duct of the same size, and much more if it is left slack or crushed. Use the shortest length that will do the job, keep it straight and fully extended, and use rigid duct for the main run where you can. If a fan is not delivering its rated airflow, too much flexible duct is often the cause.
