Plate vs Cased Axial Fans | What Are the Differences?

In this blog we’re going to be exploring plate vs cased axial fans, including what their differences are and their ideal installation locations.

What Is An Axial fan?

An axial fan is a type of fan that causes air to flow through it in an axial direction; an axial fan consists of a motor-driven rotating shaft (axis) on which there are mounted skewed blades that draw in air and force it out in a direction parallel to the shaft.

Axial fans deliver a low pressure high volume air flow that is ideal for cooling equipment and space due to efficient and even air distribution in a defined area.

Plate Axial fans

A plate axial fan is amongst the most common and economic variety of fan, often wall mounted for instant ventilation, a plate axial fan is ideal for deployment in the following locations.

  • Kitchens
  • Warehouses
  • Factories
  • Poultry sheds
  • Crypto mining facilities

All of our plate axial fans are available in single and three phase versions and most are speed controllable.

Cased Axial Fans

A cased axial fan operates in a similar fashion to a plate axial fan with rotating skewer blades, but is housed in a casing (usually cylindrical in shape), and is often used for relatively short duct lengths and can be mounted in position.

A cased axial fan can be utilised in any of the following environments:

  • Restaurants
  • Gymnasiums
  • Conference rooms
  • Workshops/warehouses
  • Swimming pools
  • Greenhouses

All of our cased axial fans are available in single and three phase versions and most are speed controllable.

Other Differences

Apart from the obvious structural differences, with one being mounted on a square, slender sheet of metal (or plate) enabling it to be installed directly into a wall and the other contained in a cylindrical casing for duct installation, these two types of fans have air flow distinctions:

High efficiency cased axial fans can be deployed wherever large air volumes must be delivered against low to medium pressure and often benefit from low installation depths, such as commercial and retail/leisure premises.

Plate mounted axial fans are designed to deliver cooling ventilation for medium to large defined areas more akin to industrial facilities due to their duct installation compatibility.
