Before comparing models, get three figures straight. First, the air volume you need to move, measured in cubic metres per hour (m³/h). This comes from the room volume and the number of air changes per hour the space needs. Second, the static pressure the fan has to work against, which rises with longer duct runs, bends, filters and grilles. Third, the noise limit for the space, because a fan that is loud enough for a plant room is not acceptable above a treatment room or office.

Those three decide the fan type before you ever look at a brand. Move a lot of air against high resistance and you want a centrifugal or plate axial fan; move a modest amount quietly through a duct and an inline mixed-flow fan is the better tool. Single-phase or three-phase?

Most commercial extract fits on a single-phase (230V) supply, and every fan picked above is single-phase. You only need three-phase (400V) once the fan gets larger than these, where a single-phase motor can no longer drive it efficiently, which in practice means the bigger plate axials and box fans. If the unit has a three-phase supply available and the fan is large, three-phase runs more efficiently and gives smoother speed control. If in doubt, tell us the supply you have and the air volume you need and we will match a fan to it.

Don't forget speed control. Almost every fan here is speed controllable, but the controller is usually a separate item, and a three-phase fan needs a three-phase controller. Size the controller to the fan's current, and factor it into the budget.
