Summary

The Elta STDL500-3EC is a Twinflow duty/standby centrifugal box fan for 500mm duct systems, with circular spigots. Two backward curved fans sit side by side in one acoustically lined case: one runs, the other waits on standby. At full speed it moves up to 6264 m³/h free air, about 5760 m³/h at 100 Pa, and still delivers 3373 m³/h against 500 Pa.

Each fan has an IP44 EC external rotor motor (380 to 480V three phase, 50/60Hz) with sealed for life bearings, and the case is 1.2mm galvanised mild steel. An auto changeover panel (149-ACO3/BDV) is fitted as standard, switching to the standby fan if the duty fan fails and sharing run hours between the two. Speed is set by the built in commissioning potentiometer or a 0-10V signal, and Elta give a 12 month (1 year) manufacturer warranty.

What it is best used for

The biggest Twinflow in the range, on a 380 to 480V three phase supply: warehousing, factories, industrial units, large kitchens (general ventilation) and big office or college systems on 500mm ducting. It moves 6264 m³/h free air, about 5256 m³/h at 200 Pa and still 3373 m³/h at 500 Pa.

It needs a three phase supply and 132 kg of structural support. If you only have single phase, the STDL500-1EC is the alternative, with about 1753 m³/h at 500 Pa. Not for corrosive, explosive or above +60°C air.

Why choose this over alternatives

The point of a twin fan is resilience. A single fan such as the Elta SSDL500-3EC Singleflow moves more air in the same duct size (6552 m³/h free air against 6264 m³/h here, and 4320 m³/h at 500 Pa against 3373 m³/h), but when its motor fails the extract stops until someone replaces it. The STDL500-3EC keeps running on its standby fan, the panel gives a normally open fail contact for a BMS or alarm, and the duty share means neither motor does all the hours. Choose it for windowless toilets, risers and any system where a dead fan means a complaint or a breach of the ventilation design; choose the Singleflow where a short outage is acceptable.

This model has circular spigots for standard circular ducting. If you are connecting to rectangular duct, the Elta STDL500-3EC-R is the same fan with 498 x 598mm rectangular spigots, which saves a transition piece. The Elta STDL500-1EC is the single phase version of the same size, with 5508 m³/h free air.

Installation notes

  • Mount the fan horizontally only. Elta show it fixed directly to circular or rectangular duct, inverted, on AV mounts or hung from drop rods, and leave access for maintenance.
  • Bring the 380 to 480V three phase, 50/60Hz supply to the terminals of the fitted auto changeover panel and provide a local means of isolation. Wiring diagram 152-720 applies.
  • Set the maximum speed on the 149-CD-POT commissioning board. For external control from a potentiometer, the 149-POT-10-MI or a 0-10V BMS signal, remove the jumper and connect to terminals ST1; the board setting then caps the top speed.
  • The panel's test jumper shortens the duty share switching time from 12 hours to 1 minute, so you can prove the changeover works at commissioning.
  • Disconnect the EC fans before any insulation resistance testing. The electronics can be damaged and this is not covered by warranty.

You'll also need

  • Elta EC Electronic Controller 149-POT-10-MI for remote manual speed control.
  • Elta AV mounts 062-SEL05 available to order, ask us.
  • Elta spigot silencers 068-0500-JF1 to JF4 (300 to 1200mm long) and fast clamps 018-500-CLAMP available to order, ask us.

What does duty/standby mean on the Elta STDL500-3EC?

There are two fans in one case. One runs as the duty fan while the other stands by. The fitted auto changeover panel starts the standby fan automatically if the duty fan fails, and it also swaps the fans over on a timed duty share so the run hours are spread across both motors.

Do I need to buy a separate changeover panel?

No. The 149-ACO3/BDV auto changeover panel comes fitted, and the mains supply connects straight to it. It provides a normally open fail contact so a BMS or alarm can see a fan failure.

How much air does the STDL500-3EC move?

Up to 6264 m³/h (1.74 m³/s) at free air on full speed, about 5760 m³/h at 100 Pa, 5256 m³/h at 200 Pa and 3373 m³/h at 500 Pa.

How do I control the fan speed?

Set a single fixed speed on the built in 149-CD-POT commissioning potentiometer, or remove its jumper and wire in the Elta 149-POT-10-MI controller or a 0-10V BMS signal. The commissioning setting then acts as the maximum speed.

What duct size does it connect to?

It has 500mm circular spigots for standard rigid or flexible ducting. The STDL500-3EC-R is the version with 498 x 598mm rectangular spigots.

Can it be mounted vertically?

No. Elta state the STDL must be mounted horizontally. It can be fixed to the duct, inverted, set on AV mounts or hung on drop rods. It weighs 132 kg, so make sure the fixings are rated for it.
