Summary
See more specification See less specification
The Elta STDL400-1EC is a Twinflow duty/standby centrifugal box fan for 400mm duct systems, with circular spigots. Two backward curved fans sit side by side in one acoustically lined case: one runs, the other waits on standby. At full speed it moves up to 4392 m³/h free air, about 3996 m³/h at 100 Pa, and still delivers 2084 m³/h against 500 Pa.
Each fan has an IP44 EC external rotor motor (220 to 240V single phase, 50/60Hz) with sealed for life bearings, and the case is 1.2mm galvanised mild steel. An auto changeover panel (149-ACO1/EDV) is fitted as standard, switching to the standby fan if the duty fan fails and sharing run hours between the two. Speed is set by the built in commissioning potentiometer or a 0-10V signal, and Elta give a 12 month (1 year) manufacturer warranty.

- EC Motor
- Up to 4392 m³/h
- Speed Controllable
What it is best used for
High volume duty/standby extract on a single phase supply: factory and workshop general ventilation, warehousing, industrial units, large commercial kitchens (general ventilation, not canopy), college halls and sports halls. It moves 4392 m³/h free air and about 3568 m³/h against 200 Pa.
It weighs 112 kg, so plan drop rods or a supporting frame with the AV mounts. The 4.20 A peak current is high for a single phase circuit, so check the supply. Not for corrosive, explosive or above +60°C air.
Why choose this over alternatives
The point of a twin fan is resilience. A single fan such as the Elta SSDL400-1EC Singleflow moves more air in the same duct size (4414 m³/h free air against 4392 m³/h here, and 2390 m³/h at 500 Pa against 2084 m³/h), but when its motor fails the extract stops until someone replaces it. The STDL400-1EC keeps running on its standby fan, the panel gives normally open fail and run contacts for a BMS or alarm, and the duty share means neither motor does all the hours. Choose it for windowless toilets, risers and any system where a dead fan means a complaint or a breach of the ventilation design; choose the Singleflow where a short outage is acceptable.
This model has circular spigots for standard circular ducting. If you are connecting to rectangular duct, the Elta STDL400-1EC-R is the same fan with 448 x 598mm rectangular spigots, which saves a transition piece. For less air, the Elta STDL315-1EC gives 2207 m³/h free air. For more, the Elta STDL500-1EC gives 5508 m³/h.
Installation notes
- Mount the fan horizontally only. Elta show it fixed directly to circular or rectangular duct, inverted, on AV mounts or hung from drop rods, and leave access for maintenance.
- Bring the 220 to 240V single phase, 50/60Hz supply to the terminals of the fitted auto changeover panel and provide a local means of isolation. Wiring diagram 152-717 applies.
- Set the maximum speed on the 149-CD-POT commissioning board. For external control from a potentiometer, the 149-POT-10-MI or a 0-10V BMS signal, remove the jumper and connect to terminals ST1; the board setting then caps the top speed.
- The panel's test jumper shortens the duty share switching time from 12 hours to 1 minute, so you can prove the changeover works at commissioning.
- Disconnect the EC fans before any insulation resistance testing. The electronics can be damaged and this is not covered by warranty.

What does duty/standby mean on the Elta STDL400-1EC?
There are two fans in one case. One runs as the duty fan while the other stands by. The fitted auto changeover panel starts the standby fan automatically if the duty fan fails, and it also swaps the fans over on a timed duty share so the run hours are spread across both motors.
Do I need to buy a separate changeover panel?
No. The 149-ACO1/EDV auto changeover panel comes fitted, and the mains supply connects straight to it. It provides normally open fail and run contacts so a BMS or alarm can see a fan failure.
How much air does the STDL400-1EC move?
Up to 4392 m³/h (1.22 m³/s) at free air on full speed, about 3996 m³/h at 100 Pa, 3568 m³/h at 200 Pa and 2084 m³/h at 500 Pa.
How do I control the fan speed?
Set a single fixed speed on the built in 149-CD-POT commissioning potentiometer, or remove its jumper and wire in the Elta 149-POT-10-MI controller or a 0-10V BMS signal. The commissioning setting then acts as the maximum speed.
What duct size does it connect to?
It has 400mm circular spigots for standard rigid or flexible ducting. The STDL400-1EC-R is the version with 448 x 598mm rectangular spigots.
Can it be mounted vertically?
No. Elta state the STDL must be mounted horizontally. It can be fixed to the duct, inverted, set on AV mounts or hung on drop rods. It weighs 112 kg, so make sure the fixings are rated for it.
