Summary

The Elta SPA400/4-1AC is a 400mm Raptor plate mounted axial fan with a 4 pole single phase motor, moving up to 3935 m³/h in free air and working against static pressures up to 100 Pa. It runs at 48 dB(A) at 3m.

It runs on a 220-240V AC external rotor motor at 1372 rpm, insulated to Class F with integral thermal overload protection, drawing 240 W. The Ziehl-Abegg FE2owlet aerofoil impeller has serrated trailing edges and winglets for lower noise, the motor is weatherproofed to IP54 with an IP55 terminal box, and Elta give a 12 month warranty.

What it is best used for

Through-wall extract or supply on a single phase supply where noise matters, in workshops, school halls, commercial kitchens with little or no ducting, vehicle garages and small industrial units. At 3935 m³/h it gives about 6 air changes an hour in a space of roughly 648 m³, for example 18m x 9m with a 4m ceiling.

It is a low pressure fan. The datasheet shows airflow only up to 100 Pa, so it is the wrong choice for ducting or heavy louvres; use a cased axial or inline mixed flow fan there. It is not suitable for corrosive or explosive atmospheres.

Why choose this over alternatives

Against the Compact Elta SCP400/4-1AC (2578 m³/h, up to 100 Pa, 121 W, 50 dB(A)), the Raptor moves more air and is quieter, thanks to its Ziehl-Abegg impeller and external rotor motor. On a three phase site the Elta SPA400/46-3AC gives similar air (3856 m³/h, up to 100 Pa, 227 W, 48 dB(A) on high speed) with a star/delta low speed. For 0-10V control choose the EC Elta SPA400/4-1EC (5299 m³/h, up to 200 Pa, 490 W, 58 dB(A)).

Installation notes

  • Mount the 540 x 540mm fan plate securely at any angle using the four 10mm holes on 490mm centres. Make sure the structure can carry its 10 kg and leave access for maintenance.
  • The motor is prewired to an IP55 terminal box on a flying lead, so the box can be placed to suit the incoming supply. Wire to Elta diagram 152-104B and make all earth connections.
  • Speed can be controlled with the 149-EL31TK electronic controller or the 149-TC14 five step transformer controller. Wire the thermal contacts into the controller circuit as shown on the diagram.
  • Fit a local means of isolation. The AC motor has an auto-reset thermal cut-out, so isolate the supply before any work because the fan can restart on its own once it cools.
  • At first start check impeller rotation and airflow direction, and that the running current does not exceed the rating plate. Inspect and clean blades and guards at least every 12 months.
