Summary

The Elta SB400-CYL4-3 is a 400mm Biflow SB bifurcated cylindrical axial fan. The motor sits in a tunnel outside the airstream, so the fan can move air at up to +200°C, or air carrying grease or dust, without that air passing over the motor. It moves up to 3636 m³/h in free air and 2516 m³/h at 100 Pa, the highest pressure in Elta's published table for this model.

A 4 pole three phase AC motor (380-415V 50Hz) runs at 1400 rpm with a 250 W output and 0.69 A peak current. It is a foot mounted, totally enclosed IP55 motor with Class H insulation and sealed for life bearings. The adjustable pitch aerofoil impeller has pressure die cast aluminium blades, the steel casing is hot dip galvanised after fabrication and suitable for external mounting, and Elta give a 12 month warranty.

What it is best used for

High volume hot or contaminated extract on 400mm duct: large commercial kitchen canopies, boiler houses, spray booths, foundry or heavy industrial process extract, and hot gas duties up to +200°C. At 50 Pa it moves 3240 m³/h.

It is not rated for explosive atmospheres, so it is the wrong fan for ATEX zones, and Elta's manual also excludes corrosive atmospheres, so talk to us before using it on aggressive fumes. Elta publish airflow only up to 100 Pa for this model, so keep the duct short and simple or step up to a two pole model.

Why choose this over alternatives

In the 400mm size there is also the Elta SB400-CON2-3 (2 pole three phase conical, 7495 m³/h, 70 dB(A)). As a four pole fan at 1400 rpm this one is the quieter choice at 55 dB(A) at the inlet, best on short, low resistance runs.

A bifurcated fan costs more than a standard cased axial because the motor has its own tunnel and Class H insulation. If the air is clean and below +70°C, a standard cased axial fan does the job for less money; choose the Biflow when heat, grease or dust would shorten a normal motor's life. The cylindrical case has a single entry motor tunnel and is shorter than the conical model in the same size (450mm long against 650mm for the Elta SB400-CON2-3).

Installation notes

  • Mount it at any angle, adequately supported, with access for maintenance. Do not obstruct the motor tunnel, as the motor relies on ambient air through it for cooling.
  • This cylindrical model has a single entry motor tunnel, which must face vertically upwards or horizontally to keep the motor cool.
  • The case is 450mm long with 8 holes of 12mm on a 450mm PCD at each end, matching Elta 061B-0400 flanges. Use Elta's high temperature 063-0400-PU250 flexible connectors for hot air duties.
  • Wire to Elta diagram 152-616. Fuses and breakers give short circuit protection only, so fit a starter with overload protection; for variable speed Elta show the fan run from an inverter.
  • Fit a local means of isolation, check rotation and airflow direction at first start, and inspect and clean the impeller at least every 12 months.

You'll also need

  • Elta matching flanges 400mm (061B-0400, the flanges Elta list for the Biflow SB)
  • Elta ancillary pack APK400SBCYL/002 (flexible connections, matching flanges, anti-vibration mounts and mounting feet) available to order, ask us
  • Elta bell mouth inlet 241B-0400-BELL and impeller side guard 078C-0400-C available to order, ask us

How much air does the Elta SB400-CYL4-3 move?

Up to 3636 m³/h in free air and 2516 m³/h at 100 Pa.

What temperature air can it handle?

Up to +200°C in the airstream, because the motor sits in its own tunnel outside the airflow. The motor itself needs ambient air between -20°C and +54°C.

Is it suitable for commercial kitchen extract?

Yes. Elta list kitchen extract as a typical application, and keeping the motor out of the greasy airstream is the main reason to choose a bifurcated fan. Clean the impeller regularly as part of the kitchen's duct cleaning regime.

Can I control the speed?

Yes, with an inverter. Elta's wiring diagram 152-616 shows the fan run from a three phase inverter, or from a single to three phase inverter with the motor reconnected in delta. Ask us to confirm the right one.

Can it be mounted outside or vertically?

Yes. The galvanised casing is suitable for external mounting as standard and the fan can be mounted at any angle, as long as the motor tunnel is not obstructed. On this cylindrical model the tunnel opening must face up or sideways.

What duct size does it fit?

400mm. The case has a 400mm internal diameter with 8 flange holes of 12mm on a 450mm PCD, and Elta's 061B-0400 matching flanges fit it.
