The Elta Multiflow SMB550/4-3AC is a 550mm square inline mixed flow box fan with a three phase AC motor, moving up to 7952 m³/h in free air and still delivering 914 m³/h against 500 Pa. It fits straight into 550mm ductwork on Ductmate flanges at each end.
The 4 pole motor runs at 1385 rpm on a 380 to 415V 50Hz supply, absorbing 1.064 kW with a peak current of 2.33 A, and has sealed for life bearings. The casing is stiffened pre-galvanised sheet steel, the impeller has 7 backward curved aerofoil blades in high performance composite, and it handles air up to 60°C. Elta give a 12 month warranty.

What it is best used for
Larger commercial systems on a three phase supply with 550mm ductwork: commercial kitchen canopy extract, restaurant and bar extract, larger plant rooms, lift motor rooms and general HVAC supply or extract in offices, schools and retail units. It holds 7243 m³/h at 100 Pa and 5386 m³/h at 300 Pa, so it handles longer runs with silencers and fittings.
Above about 400 Pa the airflow drops quickly (914 m³/h at 500 Pa). For bigger volumes at those pressures, the SMB650/4-3AC keeps 3503 m³/h at 500 Pa. It is also a three phase fan only at this airflow: the single phase SMB550 moves far less air.
Why choose this over alternatives
At 550mm the three phase model is a different class of fan from the single phase SMB550: 7952 m³/h in free air against around 5300 m³/h, and it reaches 500 Pa where the single phase version stops at 350 Pa. It draws 2.33 A per phase at 400V.
Against the SMB500/4-3AC it roughly doubles the airflow for one size up in duct. If you are working close to the top of its curve, the SMB650/4-3AC gives more headroom.
Installation notes
- Mount the fan at any angle in the duct, securely supported, and leave access for maintenance. It weighs 41 kg.
- Connect with the 550mm Ductmate flanges at each end. Elta's 550mm flexible connectors (063-0550-MFB) and anti vibration mounts (062-003) reduce transmitted noise and vibration.
- Wire to Elta diagram 152-106A: star connection for a 400V three phase supply. To reverse rotation swap any two incoming supply cables, and check rotation and airflow direction on first start.
- Fit a means of isolation, earth the fan, and protect the motor with a starter that has overload protection; fuses and breakers only give short circuit protection.
- Not for corrosive or explosive atmospheres. Inspect and clean the impeller and motor at least every 12 months.
