The casing is stiffened pre-galvanised sheet steel, the impeller has 7 backward curved aerofoil blades in high performance composite, and it handles air up to 60°C. Elta give a 12 month warranty.

What it is best used for
Short to medium duct runs on a three phase supply: plant room and lift motor room ventilation, toilet and changing area extract in offices and schools, small restaurant and cafe extract, and general HVAC supply or extract where the duct is 400mm. It keeps 2164 m³/h at 100 Pa, which suits a typical run of a few bends, a grille and a short length of duct.
It runs out of pressure at 200 Pa (1084 m³/h there), so it is the wrong choice for long runs with heat exchangers, heavy filtration or attenuators. For that kind of system resistance step up to the SMB450/4-3AC, which still moves 2578 m³/h at 200 Pa.
Why choose this over alternatives
The three phase SMB400/4-3AC and the single phase SMB400/4-1AC move almost the same air in free air (2545 against 2552 m³/h). The three phase motor draws only 0.52 A per phase at 400V against 1.09 A on the single phase model, which helps where several fans share a three phase distribution board. If a 230V supply is all you have, the single phase version is the better buy.

Installation notes
- Mount the fan at any angle in the duct, securely supported, and leave access for maintenance. It weighs 16 kg.
- Connect with the 400mm Ductmate flanges at each end. Elta's 400mm flexible connectors (063-0400-MFB) and anti vibration mounts (062-002) reduce transmitted noise and vibration.
- Wire to Elta diagram 152-106A: star connection for a 400V three phase supply. To reverse rotation swap any two incoming supply cables, and check rotation and airflow direction on first start.
- Fit a means of isolation, earth the fan, and protect the motor with a starter that has overload protection; fuses and breakers only give short circuit protection.
- Not for corrosive or explosive atmospheres. Inspect and clean the impeller and motor at least every 12 months.
