Summary
See more specification See less specification
The Elta 149-TC18 is an 8 Amp single phase transformer voltage controller giving five step speed control of single phase AC fan motors whose peak current does not exceed 8 A. Speed is chosen on a selector switch and the unit has an illuminated on/off switch.
It runs on 220 to 240V 50Hz, has a fitted type D MCB for motor protection, an IP20 enclosure and is suitable for ambient temperatures up to 40°C. Because it steps the voltage with a transformer rather than chopping it electronically, it does not create the magnetic motor hum associated with some step-less speed controllers.
- 8 Amp
- 5-step transformer controller
- Single phase
What it is best used for
Quiet, stepped speed control of larger single phase AC fans where motor hum would be noticed: restaurants and commercial kitchens, classrooms, offices, plant rooms next to occupied space and roof extract. Elta specify it for the SDA450/4-1AC, SDA500/4-1AC and SDA630/6-1AC case mounted fans, the SCD500 and SCD560 single phase cased fans, the SLC400/4-1AC and SLC500/4B-1AC long cased fans, the SEL355/2-1AC mixed flow fan and the Clearflow CF450/4-1AC roof fan.
It is the wrong controller for EC fans (use a 0-10V EC controller), three phase fans (Elta's 149-TC33 or 149-TC310) or single phase motors with a peak current above 8 A. Its IP20 enclosure is for dry indoor locations only.
Why choose this over alternatives
Compatible fans on eFans, as listed in Elta's datasheets: SDA450/4-1AC, SDA500/4-1AC, SDA630/6-1AC, SCD500, SCD560, SLC500/4B-1AC, SEL355/2-1AC and CF450/4-1AC.
Transformer control holds the motor on a clean reduced voltage at each step, so it avoids hum, at the cost of five fixed steps and a 6 kg unit. For fans up to 4 A the 149-TC14 is smaller and cheaper; for stepless control of fans with thermal contacts up to 6 A, Elta list the 149-EL61TK as the alternative on the SDA range.
Installation notes
- Check the fan's rating plate: the motor's peak current must not exceed 8 A.
- Fix the controller indoors in a dry location; the enclosure is IP20 and rated for ambient temperatures up to 40°C. It weighs 6 kg, so fix it to a solid wall.
- Wire to the fan's Elta wiring diagram for transformer speed control, with the fan's thermal cut-out connected where the diagram shows it.
- Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician with a means of isolation in the supply.

What size fan can the Elta 149-TC18 control?
Any single phase AC fan whose peak motor current does not exceed 8 A. Check the fan's rating plate or datasheet.
Which Elta fans is the 149-TC18 specified for?
Elta list it for the SDA450/4-1AC, SDA500/4-1AC and SDA630/6-1AC, the SCD500 and SCD560 single phase, the SLC400/4-1AC and SLC500/4B-1AC, the SEL355/2-1AC and the Clearflow CF450/4-1AC.
What IP rating is the 149-TC18?
IP20. Elta's transformer controllers are all IP20, so fit it in a dry indoor location.
Will the 149-TC18 make the fan hum?
No. As a transformer controller it does not create the magnetic hum associated with some step-less electronic speed controllers.
Can the 149-TC18 control a three phase or EC fan?
No. It is single phase AC only. Three phase fans need Elta's 149-TC33 or 149-TC310, and EC fans need a 0-10V EC controller.
How many speeds does the 149-TC18 give?
Five fixed speed steps, chosen on a selector switch, plus an illuminated on/off switch.
