Summary
See more specification See less specification
The Elta 149-TC14 is a 4 Amp single phase transformer voltage controller giving five step speed control of single phase AC fan motors whose peak current does not exceed 4 A. Speed is chosen on a selector switch and the unit has an illuminated on/off switch.
It runs on 220 to 240V 50Hz, has a fitted type D MCB for motor protection, an IP20 enclosure and is suitable for ambient temperatures up to 40°C. Because it steps the voltage with a transformer rather than chopping it electronically, it does not create the magnetic motor hum associated with some step-less speed controllers.
- 4 Amp
- 5-step transformer controller
- Single phase
What it is best used for
Quiet, stepped speed control of mid sized single phase AC fans where motor hum would be noticed: restaurants, offices, meeting rooms, classrooms and lift motor or plant rooms next to occupied space. Elta specify it as the transformer controller for the single phase Multiflow SMB400, SMB450 and SMB500 box fans and the Raptor SPA400/4-1AC, SPA450/6-1AC and SPA560/6-1AC plate fans.
It is the wrong controller for EC fans (use a 0-10V EC controller), three phase fans (Elta's 149-TC33 or 149-TC310) or any single phase motor with a peak current above 4 A, which needs the 8 Amp 149-TC18 or larger. Its IP20 enclosure is for dry indoor locations only.
Why choose this over alternatives
Transformer control holds the motor on a clean reduced voltage at each of its five steps, so it avoids the hum that some step-less electronic controllers cause, at the cost of fixed steps rather than infinite adjustment. Compatible fans on eFans, as listed in Elta's datasheets: SMB400/4-1AC, SMB450/4-1AC, SMB500/4-1AC, SPA400/4-1AC, SPA450/6-1AC and SPA560/6-1AC.
If your fan's peak current is above 4 A, or you want headroom to run two smaller fans from one controller, the Elta 149-TC18 is the 8 Amp version. For step-less control, Elta list the 149-EL31TK electronic controller as the alternative for the SPA400/4-1AC and SPA450/6-1AC.
Installation notes
- Check the fan's rating plate: the motor's peak current must not exceed 4 A.
- Fix the controller indoors in a dry location; the enclosure is IP20 and rated for ambient temperatures up to 40°C. It weighs 4 kg, so fix it to a solid wall.
- Wire to the fan's Elta diagram for transformer speed control (for example 152-104A on the SMB range): the supply goes to the controller terminals and the fan's thermal cut-out connects to the controller's control circuit.
- Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician with a means of isolation in the supply.

What size fan can the Elta 149-TC14 control?
Any single phase AC fan whose peak motor current does not exceed 4 A. Check the fan's rating plate or datasheet.
Which Elta fans is the 149-TC14 specified for?
Elta list it for the single phase Multiflow SMB400, SMB450 and SMB500 box fans and the Raptor SPA400/4-1AC, SPA450/6-1AC and SPA560/6-1AC plate fans.
How many speeds does the 149-TC14 give?
Five fixed speed steps, chosen on a selector switch, plus an illuminated on/off switch.
Will the 149-TC14 make the fan hum?
No. As a transformer controller it does not create the magnetic hum associated with some step-less electronic speed controllers.
Can the 149-TC14 control a three phase or EC fan?
No. It is single phase AC only. Three phase fans need Elta's 149-TC33 or 149-TC310, and EC fans need a 0-10V EC controller.
Can the 149-TC14 be fitted outdoors or in a wet area?
No. The enclosure is IP20, so it is for dry indoor locations with ambient temperatures up to 40°C.
