Summary
See more specification See less specification
The Elta 149-EL31 is a 3 Amp single phase electronic speed controller for voltage controllable AC fan motors. It gives stepless speed adjustment, so the fan duty can be set precisely during commissioning rather than picked from fixed steps.
It runs on a 220 to 240V 50Hz single phase supply, has an IP51 enclosure, a fitted motor protection fuse and minimum and maximum speed presets, and is suitable for operating temperatures up to 40°C. It weighs 0.35 kg and suits two or three wire control.
- 3 Amp
- Stepless electronic controller
- Single phase AC
What it is best used for
Stepless speed control of small single phase AC fans with a peak current up to 3 A: toilet and washroom extract, small kitchens, plant rooms and offices where the duty needs trimming on site. Elta specify it for the Raptor SPA250/2-1AC plate fan and the SDA250 and SDA315 case mounted fans.
It is the wrong controller for fans fitted with thermal cut-out contacts that need to be wired into the controller (use the TK version), for EC fans (use a 0-10V EC controller) and for three phase motors. Electronic controllers can make some motors hum at low speed; where that matters, a transformer controller is the quieter choice.
Why choose this over alternatives
Compatible fans on eFans, as listed in Elta's datasheets: SPA250/2-1AC, SDA250/4-1AC and SDA315/4-1AC. Compared with a 5-step transformer controller such as the 149-TC14, it is much smaller and lighter (0.35 kg against 4 kg) and gives infinite adjustment, at the cost of possible motor hum at low speed.
If the fan has thermal cut-out contacts, the 149-EL31TK adds motor protection through them. For motors drawing up to 6 A, step up to the 149-EL61 or 149-EL61TK.
Installation notes
- Check the fan's rating plate: the motor's peak current must not exceed 3 A.
- Fix the controller in a dry indoor position; the enclosure is IP51 and rated for operating temperatures up to 40°C.
- Wire to the terminal block (L, N, U1, U2, AUX, E) exactly as shown on Elta's wiring diagram, with the 240V supply in and the fan's variable live (brown) and neutral (blue) out. Two or three wire control is supported.
- Set the minimum and maximum speed presets during commissioning so the fan cannot be turned down to a speed where it stalls or under-ventilates.
- Installation by a qualified electrician with a means of isolation in the supply.

What fans can the Elta 149-EL31 control?
Voltage controllable single phase AC fans whose peak motor current does not exceed 3 A. Check the fan's rating plate.
Which Elta fans is the 149-EL31 specified for?
Elta list it for the Raptor SPA250/2-1AC plate fan and the SDA250 and SDA315 single phase case mounted fans.
What is the difference between the 149-EL31 and the 149-EL31TK?
The TK version connects to the fan's thermal cut-out contacts and switches off with a trip indicator if the motor overheats. The standard EL31 does not have this function.
What supply does the 149-EL31 need?
A single phase 220 to 240V 50Hz supply.
Can the 149-EL31 control an EC or three phase fan?
No. It is for single phase AC motors only. EC fans need a 0-10V EC controller such as the Elta 149-POT-10-MI.
What is the IP rating of the 149-EL31?
IP51, for dry indoor locations with operating temperatures up to 40°C.
