What it is best used for

Stepless control of single phase AC fans up to 3 A peak that have thermal cut-out contacts, typically mid sized plate and case mounted axial fans on kitchen, plant room, workshop and general extract duties. Elta specify it for the Raptor SPA450/6-1AC and SPA500/6-1AC plate fans and the SDA400/4-1AC, SDA450/6-1AC and SDA500/6-1AC case mounted fans.

Not for EC fans (use a 0-10V EC controller), three phase motors or fans drawing more than 3 A. Where low speed motor hum would be noticed, a transformer controller is the quieter option.

Why choose this over alternatives

Compatible fans on eFans, as listed in Elta's datasheets: SPA450/6-1AC, SPA500/6-1AC, SDA400/4-1AC, SDA450/6-1AC and SDA500/6-1AC.

Over the standard 149-EL31, the TK version uses the fan's own thermal contacts to shut down and latch off on overheat, and needs the start button pressed to restart, which stops a fan cycling on and off unnoticed. For motors up to 6 A with thermal contacts, use the 149-EL61TK.

Installation notes

  • Check the fan's rating plate: the motor's peak current must not exceed 3 A.
  • Fix the controller in a dry indoor position; the enclosure is IP51 and rated for operating temperatures up to 40°C.
  • Wire to the terminal block (L, N, U1, U2, AUX, E) exactly as shown on Elta's wiring diagram, with the 240V supply in and the fan's variable live (brown) and neutral (blue) out. Two or three wire control is supported.
  • Connect the fan's thermal cut-out contacts to the controller. If the cut-out opens, the controller switches off and the trip indicator lights; press the start button to restart once the motor has cooled.
  • Set the minimum and maximum speed presets during commissioning so the fan cannot be turned down to a speed where it stalls or under-ventilates.
  • Installation by a qualified electrician with a means of isolation in the supply.
